Is there a utility (perhaps in ports) that can 1) monitor critical processes and detect when they've stopped and 2) send an email alert (or even pager) and 3) restart the process if it's failed. I've been using shell scripts for this, but ISTM that somebody might have actually written a nice little program that does it.
