Actually, I was under the impression that you could swing crypto
libraries fairly painlessly, since the passwords "look different" in the
passwd database.  But best you try for yourself, since I haven't needed
to do anything like this for a while.

When asked "Do you wish to install DES?" you could have answered "No".
Remember, though, that the whole reason we offer DES is for passwd
compatibility with other platforms.
