The thing is I do that daily in a cron job 
portsdb -Uu
Today perl dumped core while doing it.
So I checked out the Index-5 from cvsup
It' worked fine yesterday with an Index-5 built in the morning.
I'll reinstall perl and ruby 
and see if that make a difference
