For whatever it's worth, "make" is a reasonably useful tool for checking dependencies of packages. The metaconfig package uses "make" to select and order the "units" that go into a Configure script. Similar technology could be used to select and install the right set of packages to be installed. I, for one, would like to be able to select {qmail,sendmail}, or bind[48] when it's time to install a system. I suspect there may be other similiar cases, too. H
