Maybe to have a BSD-licensed version of a tool with sort-of the =
functionality of smartmontools?
Assuming that the later is GPLx-licensed.

Maybe one of the vendors who sells FreeBSD as part of an appliance has =
shown some interest in this?

If you=E2=80=99re hardware is well-defined and thus the output is =
consistent, I could imagine it=E2=80=99s not too difficult to parse =
this.

I admit I haven=E2=80=99t tried it and I don=E2=80=99t really have time =
to do that.=
