Evaluating the variable to extract its _value_ needs a dollar sign, but setting it should not use a dollar sign and the value elements should be separated by ':' like this: PATH="/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin"
