Dear FreeBSD'ers,

I am not sure where these questions should be posted, either.

BTW, I have been browsing the archives and reading a little material -- in
particular, the article (in German) on PPPoE by Udo Erdelhoff. Yet I am a little
confused :-)

I would like to switch to ADSL for my home connection, and I am going to realize
a small LAN at home (two 'puters, to begin with). My FreeBSD box should work as
firewall/gateway and as... my beloved bloat^H^H^H^Hworkstation platform.

An interesting Italian ADSL ISP utilizes "PPP over ATM". I would like to learn
more on this (as opposed to PPPoE) in conjunction with FreeBSD, as well as
learning on possible/recommended ADSL modems (or even routers) for this specific
(?) case.

The modem Alcatel Speed Touch Home is reported to work. However, this ISP also
states that "Linux/Unix will only work with a router; Linux/Unix will work with
no ADSL modem -- neither USB link nor Ethernet" [sic].

I have read the cheat sheet at http://www.mostgraveconcern/freebsd/dsl.html, and
I seem to understand that an ADSL modem such as Alcatel Speed touch home and a
[good] supported network card (Intel Etherexpress Pro 100 ?) should do the job.

I also seem to understand that problems do arise for USB modems, eg 3Com dual
link, as reported in a recent thread. Am I missing something?

Thanks for any pointers, suggestions, recommendations. And apologies for the
dumb/newbieish questions.
