When doing AP mode, the output of the 'athstats' rate is unreliable as it will report the last TX'ed rate which obviously changes per node you're talking to. You need to investigate the output of the rate control module that you're using. Try this: sysctl dev.ath.0.sample_stats=1 then check dmesg Do that when it's happy @ 54mbit, then when it isn't.
