Just a suggestion, but should /usr/src/contrib/smbfs/examples/smbfs.sh.sample be copied to a directory where it will be run automaticaly as part of the startup by default. Either that or edit the man page for mount_smbfs to mention that this needs to be done before the example of how to mount shares from fstab will work. Currently I cant find anywhere that says you need to install this filebefore it will work, which is somewhat confusing for a new user who never had to use it from ports. Comments ?
