well.  linux uses resolv+, you can hack around this problem by
creating a resolv+ format host.conf (`order bind,hosts'...)
somewhere else like in /compat/linux/etc and pointing an
environment variable to it.

 I can look up the details if you need them, i haven't installed
this right now sorry...
