This works, but it's ugly for a couple of reasons. 1. Your ethernet card is listening and sending arps for all these addresses. This is no big deal with 5-10 aliases. What do you do when you have 500? 2. Since these are all real address on your network you can only use 250 or so of these. What do you do if you need more? The solution we're looking at involves vif Virtual IF. It creates an if interface that doesn't really point to an Ethernet Card but instead knows that all packets coming to that interface are for the local machine. A more detailed description is in http://www.apache.org/docs/vif.info. It includes source code to integrate this into Suns. The big question is, has anyone ported this to freebsd?
