OK Actually taking another look at it it is FreeBSD 2.2.1 (perhaps an
upgrade would be good). mrhowell and mshowell know eachother via DNS.

on mrhowell (the client)

What exactly are you looking for?
4) what's your network configuration 'twixt the client and server
The two servers are connected via 100 MB FE
5) how 'bout netmasks, simple stuff...
fine
6) are any of the machines dual-homed
dual-homed? I don't believe so
