I've added a user and she complains about not being able to do certain shells commands. I finger her acct to make sure it exists and it does: root@shell1:~# finger countv Login: countv Name: countv Directory: /home/users/countv Shell: /usr/local/bin/tcsh On since Sat Oct 4 10:55 (PDT) on ttyp1, idle 0:03, (messages off) from 128.200.244.48 No Mail. No Plan. root@shell1:~# id countv uid=1032(countv) gid=1000(users) groups=1000(users) So I 'su' as her and I finger her again: V /home/users/countv> finger countv finger: countv: no such user V /home/users/countv> pine Who are you? (Unable to look up login name) V /home/users/countv> id uid=1032 gid=1000 groups=1000 The funny thing is, I did this: V /home/users/countv> finger No one logged on.
