Mike, While I had problems on our machines with the change, this was more related to some problems with the announcement, and a problem with an old MAKEDEV script. I do not think the changes are evil; I would recommend keeping them as long as we can make the upgrade as simple and smooth as possible. I would recommend sticking together an extremely simple and straightforward announcement describing the process for -stable users, and posting it to freebsd-announce. Clearly, not all -stable users are subscribed to freebsd-stable. This might reach them; it would also be a good place to point out that a subscription to freebsd-stable would be quite helpful for them. For the 2.2.6 upgrade -- as long as this is properly handled by sysinstall, and it notifies the user of what is happening, that should be fine. I vote for keeping the changes.
