Just my opinion but.... uhm...try to stay out of vipw unless you have to, you can screw stuff up if you make a mistake... and a better util to use is chpass...a little more advanced then chsh...chpass also gives you some other options that I find usefull, like account expiration and passwd expiration. Either way you will need to be logged in as root.
