OK so far.  IDE drive just a holdover or afraid to unlock the potential of
your system? :-)

Lucky you SuSE just released an X server for this.

You don't, it's normal.

FreeBSD requires it's own slice type.  Delete drive D and use
PartitionMagic to shrink down that extended partition.
