It appears my BIOS is using PnP, but there's no switch to turn it all off.
I think I can turn it off on the selected slot but I haven't tried that
yet.  
Where did you see Bill Paul's suggestion?  I checked his web page on
www.freebsd.org and I didn't see any recommendations.
