I think you can go pretty much anywhere along the 4 branch without trouble if you follow the instructions in /usr/src/UPDATING. You might want to install the new make.conf after you cvsup and edit it, but other than that, leave upgrading of /etc until after installworld (then you can do it with mergemaster).
