From my search of the archives, it seems that setting up DSL with an external modem and static IP is as simple as configuring the interface. Here is what I have added to /etc/rc.conf: #ifconfig_ed0="inet 216.231.50.6 netmask 255.255.255.0" #defaultrouter="216.231.50.1" When I boot now I get this message: /kernel: ed0: device timeout 'ifconfig -a' gives me this: lp0: flags=8810<POINTOPOINT,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 ed0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 inet 216.231.50.6 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 216.231.50.255 ether 00:00:c0:cd:f0:c8 lo0: flags=8049<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 16384 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000 It appears to me that all should be going well. However, I can't connect to anything. I wonder if this is a case of bad hardware. It's an old ISA NIC that I pulled out of a Boeing Surplus special that's labeled "SMC" and nothing else. I've never seen it working. Has anyone ever seen a similar error message as mine regarding my NIC? It seems to be the only strangeness that I've encountered.
