A very good point. Unfortunately, I am not in a position to answer
that. I removed /usr/src last night, before neglecting to take a backup
of the kernel configuration files. I've dumped the remainder of the disk
to a new drive for safe keeping and will install 4.0S on the box today.

FWIW: I tried booting the old i486 kernel on the original box last
night. It booted but was unable to ping 127.0.0.1 so I think it's well
fuggered.

Thanks to those that helped. It is appreciated.
