was referred here from freebsd-questions

the problem i'm seeing is this: booting with the 4.0-R kern and mfsroot
disks, ahc0 is detected (Adaptec AIC-7899 scsi controller), however, the
hard disk attached to it (da0) is not... no da* messages on bootup at
all. when the installer launches, an attempt to setup partitions,
etc.. gets a complaint about no disks found (naturally)... my experience
up to this point is with IDE, so it's possible that i'm missing something
silly here... i can confirm that the hardware itself is working ok, since
NT booted and operated fine (not anymore since i did a low-level format...)

any assistance you can offer is greatly appreciated. thank you..
