I've just done this here. Worked fine. In two machines.
The only difference is that I made:

# make buildkernel KERNEL=MYKERNEL
		   ^^^^^^
		   |
		   +--- All 'caps' here... (and with installkernel)
		
# make installkernel KERNEL=MYKERNEL
