Has anyone seen one of these work?

It exactly matches a string in /etc/pccard.conf.sample

and is correctly identified.
It responds to the dumbcis command with valid looking data
stating that it is a "Generic 16550 comaptible modem"

in fact it says:
Tuple #1, code = 0x1 (Common memory descriptor), length = 2
    000: 00 ff
        Common memory device information:
Device number 1, type No device, WPS = OFF
Speed = No speed, Memory block size = reserved, 32 units
Tuple #2, code = 0x15 (Version 1 info), length = 48
    000: 04 01 5a 6f 6f 6d 20 54 65 6c 65 70 68 6f 6e 69
    010: 63 73 2c 20 49 6e 63 2e 00 50 43 4d 43 49 41 20
    020: 35 36 4b 20 4c 54 20 44 61 74 61 46 61 78 00 ff
        Version = 4.1, Manuf = [Zoom Telephonics, Inc.],card vers =
[PCMCIA 56K LT DataFax]
Tuple #3, code = 0x20 (Manufacturer ID), length = 4
    000: 00 02 01 00
        PCMCIA ID = 0x200, OEM ID = 0x1
Tuple #4, code = 0x21 (Functional ID), length = 2
    000: 02 00
        Serial port/modem
Tuple #5, code = 0x22 (Functional EXT), length = 4
    000: 00 02 0f 5c
        Serial interface extension:
                16550 UART, Parity - Space,Mark,Odd,Even,
[etc.]

the problem is that it is identified as sio4, given realisitic looking
resources, and seems happy. yet if I touch
/dev/cuaa4 the system is frozen SO FAST that it doesn't even have time to
echi the CR/LF to the screen.
(e.g.
# stty all </dev/cuaa4*FREEZE*

(I hit enter but it froze before it was echoed)

Is there somethign I need to know about PCMCIA MODEMS,
like "They aren't supported in -current" or anything blindingly
obvious like "you need flag 0xYY or they freeze"?

Needless to say it seems to work with windows ( at least it chats back and
forth and reports the lack of dial tone)

Since I'm supposed to be leaving on a world trip in 3 days with only this
modem for connection to home, I'm kinda hoping htere's a simple fix.

Julian
