Hi, It's not the permissions on /var/mail itself that's the problem is it? How does the pop server lock the mailbox. I know/think some create a file and if /var/mail isn't writabel, that's going to fail. Try using ktrace on the pop daemon/inetd or whatever launches it. That should show you what's failing.
