SSH.

Replace telnet with ssh and you will have encryption, compression and a
number of other nice features.

There is a port for SSH already, and the SSH FAQ has info on PPP
tunnelling (IIRC).

Beware SSH version 2 though as it has a far more restrictive licence than
version 1.
