The XFree86 setup provided by everybody else so far worked fine for me, 
specifically the

        Option      "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

line, which is all I really care about, as that's themouse wheel. 
Humorously, in FreeBSD the wheel only works when I run it as a USB mouse. 
Once I put the USB->PS/2 converter on it, the wheel works no more. I use 
it as a USB mouse, so all is well.
