I don't dispute any of this, as long as when all is said and done, there
is a relatively simple way for people to upgrade from 2.2.x to
3.0-pickyourflavor.

Failure to provide this mechanism seems counter productive.

However, there are a lot of 3.x systems out there that need updating, and
the existing tools don't work...
