That is what surprised me: after the kernel kicks in everything works fine.
It mounts root in the extended slice alright (the only FBSD slice in ad0
is ad0s10):
ixtoto# df
Filesystem  1K-blocks     Used    Avail Capacity  Mounted on
/dev/ad0a     4071604  2289008  1456868    61%    /
