I'm successfully using a patched version of 3.3 on a 9FX Reality ViRGE/VX with the XF86_S3V server. The No Second Restart problem with the XF86_SVGA server may have been fixed with the 3.3.1 version XFree86. The servers authors were aware of the problem. According to the README.S3V docs, and from some of the servers authors, either server will work with the ViRGE chipsets. You may also find that drawing arcs with a line width of 1 in XFIG won't stay on the screen. This too may have been fixed with version 3.3.1.
