I'll take a stab at this. According to the article "Maintaining Patch Levels With Open Source BSDs" you need to do the following: cd /sys/i386/conf config KERNELNAME cd ../../compile/KERNELNAME make depend && make all install && reboot It appears that you aren't performing a "make all install" just "make install". The article can be found at http://www.samag.com/archive/0809/feature.shtml and I keep a copy next to my computer at work and at home!
