Do you use gdm, xinitrc or gnome_enable="YES" in the rc.conf file. if you dont enable gnome in the rc.conf you can have this problem. for enable gnome try in the terminal: # ee /etc/rc.conf writ : gnome_enable="YES" if you did that gnome work more easy.
