I'll take a look. Instead of duplicating code all over the place, you might want to rewrite passwd(1) to use pw(8) as backend. There is an option to pw(8) to have it read a password from a specified file descriptor, so a combination pipe() / fork() / close() / exec() / write() should work fine.
