As per suggestions from both dwhite and terry, I reset the DRQ to 5 on the sound card, and after 5 minutes or so (I can't get over how fast it is to rebuild a FreeBSD kernel, at least with 16Meg and a 100Mz CPU) was able to verify that sound works just great now!
