Turns out this is an OBJDIR problem (hence the CC: to Bruce).  It
works without "make obj" but not with.  This is a 3.1-stable system
about 1 1/2 months old with the latest /usr/share/mk and docproj
tools.

By the way, "make clean" in doc/en/handbook leaves
"handbook.html-split.tar" and "handbook.html-split.tar.gz" behind.
