Hi Brian,

Thanks for your assistance. It helped.

Ooops, I forgot that plain text is preferred for mailing lists and news
groups... I'm just so used to creating readable emails these days using bold
text. Thanks for the reminder.

> (1) sendmail_enable="NONE"   in /etc/rc.conf
This worked very well to eliminate the first problem.

> (2) Edit file /etc/mail/mailer.conf
I had done this when the freebsd installer asked to overwrite
/etc/mail/mailer.conf.

Ok, so sendmail is now out.

There is still the second problem with the permissions denied (listed below
in plain text this time). Anyone have any ideas?

All the best,

Peter

Installing Courier Mail
I get the following messages during booting. This error occurs when running
the courier startup rc.d script. It seems that the permissions on the
directories is not correct? What should they be?

#  /usr/local/etc/rc.d/courier.sh start
/var/spool/courier/tmp/courierfilter.pid: Permission denied
authdaemond/var/spool/courier/tmp/ldapaliasd.lock: Permission denied
ll_daemon_start: Resource temporarily unavailable
Could it be something to do with the location of the
"/var/spool/courier/tmp/" directory on freebsd? "ls" logs follow.

../rc.d/courier.sh paths:
prefix=/usr/local
sysconfdir=/usr/local/etc/courier
sbindir=/usr/local/sbin
libexecdir=/usr/local/libexec
datadir=/usr/local/share/courier
