Phew.  You had me paranoid something was recently broken.

I think you just got screwed by a bad combo of hardware you were
testing.  Sound didn't really work on alpha until rather recently (6-9 mo?)
And Doug's buspace cleanups finally removed a hack that will mess up at 
least SYM cards...
