Hi,

I had the same problem with different ATI Rage cards. I found that
XFree86 4.2 has CompsiteSync defaults to on. So my Monitor doesnt
synchronize.

I wrote 

        Option "composite_sync" "off"

in Section "Device" and now its okay.
