  This is Research Systems Inc's Interactive Data Language, a data
  visualisation and manipulation language/environment.
  
  You can think of it as interpreted Fortran with Motif.  Scientists
  love it.
  
  Note that IDL is commercial software; when installed this will let you
  run the demo endlessly, or play with IDL with a seven-minute time
  limit.
