I was advised to send this problem to the group. Hopefully, someone
  can help.

I just installed 2.2.2 from scratch and was able to configure and
compile a custom kernel. However, I tried a week later and got this
  error:

  gcc -c -O -Wreturn-type -Wcomment -Wredundant-decls -Wimplicit
  -Wnested-externs -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes
  -Wpointer-arith -nostdinc -I- -I. -I../.. -I../../../include
  -DAPM_BROKEN_STATCLOCK -DFAILSAFE -DCOMPAT_43 -DCD9660 -DMSDOSFS -DNFS
  -DFFS -DINET -DKERNEL ../../kern/kern_clock.c
  machine/cpufunc.h: In function `hardclock':
machine/cpufunc.h:331: inconsistent operand constraints in an `asm'
  *** Error code 1

  Stop.

I have removed and reinstalled the sources and still the error occurs.
This happens for every config, even GENERIC.

  I'm compiling with gcc2.7.2.1 on a Compaq Presario P60.

  Any ideas?

  John
