A few obvious questions: Does it always panic in exactly the same
way? If not, do the failures look fairly random or is there a common theme?
What was the configuration of the machine when it worked? If possible, why
not go back to that configuration? Did you try updating to 2.2-stable? Did
you try a previous release (2.2.1 or perhaps 2.1.7.1) to see if this gets
rid of the problem? How much from the standard GENERIC kernel config does
your kernel config file deviate?
