ok.. after looking at the code for a while.. (and that was after I
searched for check_modetable_for_sanity :) )...  and I found NO function
that does what you talk about...

the closest is in scinit where it compares the bios mode table to what
is in vgaregs, which is earlier read in from the VGA registers...

now, if you have a better idea what the problem is, please tell me...
