I had troubles with this just a couple of weeks ago - I ran portupgrade
for XFree86 and it failed.  Basically the meta-port ports/x11/XFree86-4
won't build properly because its dependencies are misordered.  You can
try the portupgrade, and if it fails go to
ports/x11/XFree86-4-libraries and "make install".  Then try portupgrade
again and it will proceed fine.
