Hm?  It logs in readable format by default:

Aug 28 15:51:58 hp4000was1 printer: offline or intervention needed
Aug 28 15:51:58 hp4000was1 printer: paper out
Aug 28 15:52:06 hp4050eacct1 printer: offline or intervention needed
Aug 28 15:52:06 hp4050eacct1 printer: paper out

In fact, I don't think you can make it log any other way.
