This type of question should probably be sent to freebsd-questions. Anyways, you should make an inventory of you hardware (ethernet, harddrives, any raid controllers, etc.) http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install-pre.html and have a look at the hardware docs in either ftp://ftp4.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/4.9-RELEASE/ ftp://ftp4.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/5.2-RC2/ depending on which branch you are interested in.
