This suggests, contrary to my last message, that maybe the turning
things off (D3) on the PCI bus might be bad.  Maybe this is the cause:

pci0: <serial bus, SMBus> at device 31.3 (no driver attached)
pci0:31:3: setting power state D3

since I know some batteries are connected via the SMBus.
