Sometime between Feb 6 and Feb 21, there was a change that has broken the
console on my athlon. init is acting like it can't open the console -- the
forked process sleeps and respawns, but there are no messages. Single user
and serial console have no effect and offer no additional output.

I'm going to play binary-search to find the breakage date, but any
suggestions for getting the error that init is catching would be
appreciated.
