 another group member informed me of what i feared. my printer, like my
modem, requires windows drivers. a winprinter. i looked at the box it came
in, and it even touts itself as designed for windows. hooray for hollywood.

 all is not lost. i'm going to pick up a cheap black and white printer and
slip it into LPT2.

thanks for the help, i'll just use it on another printer.
