Yeah, I couldn't get the first one to work and I used the second
one which is the one that got locked up with a black screen.

Is this the /usr/ports/x11/XFree86 subdirectory?

I'm not exactly sure which directories you are talking about.
When I did the re-install of 4.2 I just followed the
the manual:

    # cd /usr/ports/x11/XFree86-4
    # make all install clean

I assume this is the second directory you are referring to.
