Don't know. I'm using tmpfs without any memory limitation since years. No 
problems so far.

root@pizelot:~ # grep tmpfs /etc/fstab
tmpfs                   /tmp            tmpfs   rw,mode=1777    2       0
tmpfs                   /var/tmp        tmpfs   rw              2       0
