There's another workaround:

Settings->Configure Konqueror
File Management->File Associations
Select image/gif
Go to embedding tag:
Select gvpart (part of gwenview) as preferred handler

The default khtmlimage (part of kdelibs) doesn't work.

Haven't done any further analysis yet.
